The Difference Between ESports and Sports
Should eSports be considered a professional sport? First we should look at the definitions of the words “sport” and “eSport.” A sport is by definition “An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment” (Oxford). Whereas “esports – or electronic sports – is the umbrella term for organized, competitive computer gaming” (Dirs). As stated in Ben Dirs, article, “They compete as part of slickly-operated teams, which in turn compete in regional leagues. They might train for 14 hours a day. They study strategy, technique, the opposition. They demonstrate remarkable reflexes and mental agility. They deal with enormous pressure, experience euphoric highs and shattering lows.” Everything mentioned by Ben Dirs is what a traditional professional athlete would do on a daily basis, the only difference is that eSports players are sitting in front of a computer for that time. So, why shouldn’t eSports be considered a professional sport?
